Physical Education Grades 3-5

DeSales Catholic School Physical Education
Grading Policy Grades 3-5

The following grading policy will be in effect for students in grades 3-5.  I feel that this policy will be a valid way of physically, affectively, and cognitively assessing students in Physical Education.

Daily Participation Grade      80%

Students’ daily participation grade is based on a 0 – 4 point rubric, with 4 being the highest.   The information below explains the 0 – 4 grading scale.  Achieving a 4 daily should be very attainable!

4Student responds quickly to directions; gives 100% at all times; works to or above potential; initiates play; shows respect for teacher, equipment, rules and others; shows good sportsmanship at all times; helps others; is cooperative and attentive; demonstrates proper behavior in the gym; and does not fool around during class.

3- Student responds to directions; gives 100% most of the time; works to potential; shows respect for teacher equipment rules and others most of the time; shows good sportsmanship most of the time; is cooperative and attentive; demonstrates proper behavior in the gym most of the time; and does not fool around during class most of the time.

2Student responds slowly to directions; does not give 100%; is uncooperative; does not work to potential; shows good sportsmanship sometimes; is disruptive; demonstrates inappropriate behavior in gym; occasionally disrespects teacher, equipment, rules and others; and occasionally creates unsafe environment.

1- Student needs constant attention; behaviors in gym are below average; takes time with directions; fools around in gym; initiates trouble; is disrespectful to teacher, equipment, rules, and others; is uncooperative; only tries sometimes; and creates unsafe environment.

0- Student is not prepared; constantly fools around; disrespectful to teacher, equipment, rules, and others; creates unsafe environment; and demonstrates overall inappropriate behavior.

 P.E. Journal               20%
Students will be required to write in a P.E. journal 1 time a week. Journals will be handed in on their P.E. day at the beginning of class and will be returned the following day. Each journal entry will be worth 10 points. If it is handed in on time and answers the proposed questions in complete sentences, the student will receive full credit.

Things I Should Write In My P.E. Journal

  1. What activities did we do today in P.E.?
  2. What were some of the rules of the games that we played?
  3. What are some things that I feel I did well?
  4. What are some things that I feel I could do better next time?
  5. Did I use good sportsmanship and play fairly?
  6. Did I like the activities we did?
  7. Would I like to do the activities again?
