COURSE OBJECTIVE:
Health is designed for DeSales students to learn acceptance of personal responsibility and their lifelong health. We will promote respect for the health of others and students will understand their growth and development at this time in their lives. Students will obtain the necessary information to lead a healthy lifestyle.
CLASS STRUCTURE:
Class will consist of lecture, group discussion, group activities/presentations, textbook assignments, quizzes, tests and current health events.
COURSE CONTENT / MAJOR TOPICS:
The following units are taught during the school year:
1. Mental and Emotional health 2. Family and Social Health
3. Growth and Development 4. Nutrition
5. Personal Health and Physical Activity 6. Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs
7. Communicable and Chronic Diseases 8. Consumer and Community Health
9. Environmental Health 10. Injury Prevention and Safety
MATERIALS NECESSARY FOR CLASS:
Students must bring all materials necessary for class to every class meeting including pen/pencil, textbook, notebook and paper.
HOMEWORK POLICY:
Homework assignments will be assigned on a regular basis. They will be based on the subject area that we are currently studying. All homework assignments must be handed in at the beginning of class on the due date. If homework is incomplete, students will receive a homework slip that must be signed by a parent/guardian before the assignment will be accepted. Signed homework slip and late assignment will be accepted with a 20% deduction for each day that it is late. If a student is absent, the homework assignment should be turned in the following class or it will be considered late.

Attendance, Behavior and Participation 10%
Tests and Projects 40%
Homework and Quizzes 40%
Notebook 10%
Health Current Event Format
*You will be required to turn in a current event once a month in the following format. These will be added in as a homework grade worth a possibility of 30 points.
ALWAYS print or cut out your article and attach it to the back of your write-up. It will NOT be graded otherwise!
1) Topic: You must indicate whether your article is of national or world importance. (1 point)
2) Title: Write the full title of your article. (1 point)
Source: Write the source of your article. It must be a CREDIBLE source. (CNN, ABC, Time, News Journal, Buffalo News, Lockport Union Sun and Journal, etc.) (1 point)
Date: When was your article published? It MUST be within ONE MONTH’S TIME. (1 point)
3) Vocabulary: Choose TWO words from the article that you or your classmates may not know, find the definitions, and write them out. (2 points)
4) Summary: In PARAGRAPH FORM, write a summary of the article which includes: (6 points)
WHO? - What people, countries, or organizations were involved?
WHERE? - What was the location of the incident?
WHEN? - When did the action take place? Is it ongoing?
WHAT? - What happened or is happening?
WHY? - Why did this occurrence take place?
HOW? - How was the world/country/community affected?
5) Prediction: State what you think might happen next and EXPLAIN why you predict this way.
(Must be AT LEAST 2 sentences.) (4 points)
6) Opinion: State your opinion ab out the story and EXPLAIN why you feel this way.
(Must be AT LEAST 2 sentences.) (4 points)
7) Typing: You will receive 2 extra credit points if your current event is typed up. (+2 points)
8) Oral Presentation: EVERY current event you turn in will be presented in front of the class. You will present for AT LEAST one minute, talking about the article's significance, importance, and relevance to the class. (10 points)
